Sør-Hidle , also known as Hidle , is an inhabited island in the Horgefjord in the municipality of Strand in the Norwegian province of Rogaland .

It is located in the middle of the fjord about four kilometers west of the mainland, southwest of Tau . The city center of Stavanger is about nine kilometers southwest. Larger islands in the neighborhood are Heng in the southeast, Horge in the south, Hidlekjeøya , Åmøy , Store Prestholm and Litle Prestholmen in the west and Rennesøy , Brimse and Talgje in the north. Immediately in front of the northeastern tip is the island of Maglaholmen .

In north-south direction, the island extends for about two kilometers with a width of up to one kilometer. The highest point is the Kråkeberg with 81 meters in the southern part of the island. The island's shoreline is characterized by several bays. Rudlenesvika in the north, Seiavika , Hidlevågen and Grønevik in the east and Vestre Vågen and Dalstøvika in the west.

Use and buildings

The island is privately owned and was acquired in 1965 by gardeners Åsmund and Else Marie Bryn. They planted 3,000 Sitka spruce and Scots pine to protect them from harsh winds . About 500 of the trees were preserved and form a forest. Starting in 1980, plants for the family's nursery were cultivated on an area of ​​4,000 m² in the north of the island. This garden was continuously expanded and attracted visitors. The Flor & Fjære Botanical Garden has existed since 1987, including a restaurant opened in 1995 and a palm garden. In 2016 the garden counted around 35,000 visitors. In 2007 the Norwegian Queen Sonja of Norway celebrated her 70th birthday on the island.

There are 26 archaeological sites and cultural monuments on the island. Under the southern part of the island of the lead Ryfast belonging -Tunnelsystem Ryfylke tunnel along which leads from Stavanger to dew.
