features

The southern French saber-insect is physically similar to the other species of the genus Barbitistes . It has a thick abdomen, a saddle-shaped pronotum and antennae about the length of the body . It has greatly shortened wings. The basic color is olive green or brown to light green. There are small dark spots on the pronotum and abdomen that make the horror appear darker. The wings are dark red on the outer edge, yellow on the inside. A white, dark-framed stripe runs from the antennae to the wings. The antennae and legs, with the exception of the thighs, are colored burgundy. Often there are also red areas on the head. The male's cerci are curved downwards and less S-shaped than in other Central European saber terrors. The subgenital plate has a short process that protrudes beyond the cerci. The size difference between the sexes is small in this species: females reach a body length of 18 to 25 millimeters, while males are 18 to 22 millimeters long.

Way of life and distribution

The southern French saber hedge prefers shady places in its habitat. Its distribution area is in Spain and southern France , up to the foothills of the Alps at an altitude of 1500 meters. There it occurs in sparse forests and at forest edges. The adults occur from June to August.
