The Southern Han Empire or Nanhan ( Chinese  南 汉 , Pinyin Nán Hàn , English Southern Han ; 917–971) was one of the Ten Empires of the Five Dynasties formed between the rule of the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty ( Wudai ) in the area of the present-day provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi and beyond that in China.

It goes back to Liu Yin ( 劉 隱 ), who was appointed local military governor ( jiedushi ) of Qinghaijun ( 清 海军 ) in 904, during the Tang Dynasty .

Its capital was in what is now the city of Guangzhou (Canton). At first the state was called Yue , later Han . It was destroyed in 971 by the Northern Song Dynasty.

Its four rulers were:

  • Liu Yan 劉 龑 (Gaozu 高祖)
  • Liu Fen 刘 玢 (Shangdi 殇 帝)
  • Liu Cheng 刘 晟 (Zhongzong 中 宗)
  • Liu Chang 刘 鋹 (Houzhu 后主)
