List of domestic dogs

The South Russian Ovcharka ( Russian Южнорусская овчарка ) is a Russian dog breed recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 326 ).

description

The South Russian Ovcharka is a breed of sheepdog from Russia. Originally, the South Russian Shepherd Dog comes from the Crimean Peninsula . He's a big dog that is supposed to be lively, responsive, and muscular. The height at the withers should not be less than 62 cm in bitches and at least 65 cm in males. There is no maximum for either. Its appearance - the hair - distinguishes it from the other Ovcharka races: it is very long (10–15 cm), covering the entire body, with an abundant undercoat. The hair feels like goatskin and is mostly white. But there are also gray and beige dogs as well as white dogs with gray plates.

Essence and use

The South Russian Ovcharka is described as robust, brave, vigilant and spirited. The breed was bred for its independence and protective instinct. Originally, she had to keep order without human help during work, for example when the sheep were drinking water. The dogs made sure that the sheep only drank water in small groups, otherwise the whole spring would have been destroyed. That is why the South Russian Ovcharka combines the characteristics of distrust of strangers with great sensitivity and a talent for mastering situations. He accepts when a dominant dog or human is in control; but if he notices uncertainty, he wants to dominate. It is imperative for a puppy that he belongs to the family and grows up in a family circle.

Legal position

The southern Russian Ovcharka is on the breed list of potentially dangerous dog breeds in the Swiss canton of Ticino , and keeping it there requires a permit.
