history

The place was at an important intersection of the Hohen Strasse with a connection leading from the Rhine over the Hohen Westerwald to the Dill . As early as 1612 there was a post station on the Antwerp - Liège - Cologne - Frankfurt am Main line , because the town was roughly 82 kilometers away from Cologne and Frankfurt. At times 30 to 40 horses were available here to be changed for carriages and dispatch riders. In 1675, Duke Charles of Lothringen set up a headquarters for the imperial troops in Freilingen. The post office, built in 1780 and adorned with a post rider carved in red sandstone, was demolished in 1952.
