History of the Atonement Crosses

Atonement crosses are called a special form of medieval monuments . These were part of atonement treaties that were made to end blood feuds due to murder or manslaughter . Atonement crosses were, as the name already shows, predominantly in the form of a cross. Often the victim's killing tool or a typical professional device was depicted carved in stone. However, dates were rarely incorporated and texts between the 13th and 16th centuries were not included at all. In 1533, the neck court order of Emperor Charles V largely ended the custom of private agreements. Ordinary courts took their place . However, there were individual regions in which atonement agreements lasted until the 17th century.
