Name and origin

content

Sēpai contains many hidden techniques designed to confuse the opponent in battle. Sēpai is the continuation of Kata Seisan . The techniques should also be carried out in such a way that they are difficult to see for the opponent. Sēpai has several notable characteristics: The attack directions in Sēpai are not always frontal and are also used at an angle of 45 ° to the opponent.

The Bunkai study of Kata also leads to fruitful results: So the Sēpai contains levers (e.g. Hara Gatame - in German: " belly stretch levers ") and throws - that is, fighting techniques that are actually not characteristic of karate, but nonetheless for Combat repertoire of any comprehensive self-defense system.

In order to throw the opponent off balance, a previous sinking followed by lifting of one's own body is used to deliver power. Sēpai is (along with Saifā ) regulated by the WKF ( World Karate Federation ) and the JKA ( Japan Karate Association ) as a standard tournament kata for preliminary rounds in competitions. In the Gōjū-ryū style, Sēpai is the third highest kata.
