Sıddık Sami Onar

Sıddık Sami Onar (* 1898 in Istanbul ; † 9. August 1972 ) was a Turkish state and administrative law and the first elected rector of Istanbul University .

Life

Onar came from a family who fled from the Spanish Inquisition to the Ottoman Empire in 1492 and settled in Thessaloniki ( see also : Sephardim , Dönme ).

He attended the prestigious Vefa High School and then graduated from Istanbul University with a law degree. Among other things, he worked as a commercial judge in Istanbul and as a lecturer and teacher at the Mekteb-i Mülkiye in Ankara and at the Galatasaray grammar school .

After the university reform of 1933 he was sent to the Istanbul University as a professor of administrative law appeal and a year later professor ( Professor ). He was head of the law school twice and was later elected rector. He held this office until 1949, was re-elected in 1959, but resigned in response to the dismissal of 147 professors. Eventually he was elected rector a third time and was in office until 1963. 1948 awarded him the University Toulouse the doctorate .

After the coup d'état of May 27, 1960 , he was summoned to Ankara by the National Unity Committee on the same day to head a commission that was supposed to work out the basic principles of a new constitution. This committee was named Onar Commission . The new constitution came into force on July 20, 1961.

In 1972 the Italian President awarded him the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .

Today in Istanbul, Professor Sıddık Sami Onar Street in the Eminönü district is named after him.
