Sōichi Aikawa

Sōichi Aikawa ( Japanese 相 川 宗 一 Aikawa Sōichi ; born September 13, 1942 ) is a Japanese politician and was the first mayor of Saitama from 2001 to 2009 .

Aikawa studied at the Keio University and graduated there in 1965. Before he became first mayor of Saitama in May 2001, Aikawa was a member of the parliament of Saitama prefecture from October 1980 to April 1991 and for 10 years, from March 1991 to April 2001, mayor of the City of Urawa .

On May 24, 2009, Aikawa, who had been supported by the LDP and the Kōmeitō , lost the mayoral election to Hayato Shimizu , who was supported by the opposition Democratic Party , who replaced him on May 27, 2009.
