Sōshoku Danshi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With Sōshoku (kei) Danshi ( Japanese 草食 (系) 男子 , dt. " Grass eater") and Nikushoku (kei) Joshi ( 肉食 (系) 女子 , dt. "Meat eater") there has been a development in the since the mid-2000s Characterized gender balance in Japanese society.

The term sōshoku danshi (English: Herbivore men ) was created in 2006 by the columnist Maki Fukasawa for men who show little or no interest in sex - also known in Japanese as a "carnal relationship" ( 肉 交 , nikukō ) - and nikushoku joshi as a counterpart. The terms follow an analogy from the animal kingdom , in which herbivores are generally regarded as passive and carnivores as active and aggressive.

Herbivore men are mainly used to describe younger men who are successful and determined in their careers and jobs, but have little success in terms of love and sexuality or who spend little energy on having a full love life. Conversely, carnivore women are those who take the initiative to find suitable love partners for themselves. This describes a trend that runs counter to the classic distribution of roles in Japan. Traditionally, a sexually active man faces the self-confident but sexually subordinate figure of Yamato Nadeshiko .

The herbivore man's topos first appeared in the media, but has since become part of common usage. In a survey by a dating agency, 74% of the men questioned described themselves as entirely or predominantly of the herbivore type. A 2010 survey found that over 60% of men in their twenties and 70% of men in their thirties considered themselves herbivores. The Japanese government views the phenomenon as a possible cause of the nation's falling birth rate. Similar to Germany, Japan is considered a country with a low birth rate .

This trend reflects the relatively high pressure that younger Japanese workers in particular are exposed to. On the one hand, career pressure with countless hours of overtime and the need to spend the evening with colleagues several times a week leaves little time for other activities. Especially since society still adheres to the model that the man must be the breadwinner of the family and the woman should give up her job with the first pregnancy. On the other hand, male sexual behavior in Japan is relatively highly polarized. A large group of men with an active-aggressive, but also time-consuming, promiscuous lifestyle, which is reflected in many institutions and rites known abroad ( Love Hotel , Nampa , Gōkon , Enjokōsai ) is opposed to the large group of Otakus , which differ from the Disconnect the outside world, avoid interpersonal contacts and experience sexuality almost exclusively through the media.
