The class Д2 (German transcription D2) railcars of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are narrow-gauge diesel railcars for use on the island of Sakhalin .

development

The southern part of Sakhalin was part of Japan until 1945 and became part of the Soviet Union as a result of the Second World War . The rail network had the usual Japanese gauge of 1067 mm ( Cape gauge ). In addition to class D51 steam locomotives, there were also diesel railcars of various Japanese designs. Eight of them were reactivated from 1958 when the expansion of the 1067 mm network to the northern part of the island increased the need for vehicles for local transport. In 1961 eight Japanese-style railcars of the A1 series were added. In the 1980s, these railcars were due to be replaced. The attempt to change the gauge of a broad-gauge multiple unit of the series ДР1 (DR1) failed.

Since the 1067 mm gauge was not significantly represented in the Soviet Union outside of Sakhalin, and because of the experience of the Japanese rail vehicle industry, it was decided to purchase railcars from the Japanese company Fuji Heavy Industries . In 1985 ten four-part diesel-hydraulic railcars were delivered to the Dalnewostochnaja zhelesnaja doroga . They were designated as Д2-001 to -010 and replaced the diesel railcars previously used.

In 1986 the Dalnewostochnaja schelesnaja doroga also received four two-part railcars of the class キ ハ 58 (Kiha58) from the years 1963 to 1980 as a gift from Japan , these were referred to in the Soviet Union as "Киха58" (Kicha58), later as "К" (K) , used alongside the Д2 and decommissioned between 2001 and 2005.

construction

The class Д2 multiple units each consist of two motor cars and two trailer cars, which are equipped with transitions. In each of the two motor vehicles there is a diesel engine that acts on the axles of the end bogies. As a result, only about half the length of the vehicle is available as passenger space in the motor vehicle. The entrances are therefore in the middle of the car and at the ends facing the transitions to the sidecar. The sidecars have the same dimensions (length of a car 21.3 m) and entrances at the ends of the car.

Only the number of the entire train is written on the front, on the sides the individual parts are marked with numbers -1 to -4. The motor cars -1 and -4 are identical, as are the trailer cars -2 and -3, so that the individual cars can also be used in the train in a way that differs from the nominal position. Use with or without a sidecar is possible and is also practiced. To create longer trains, double units from complete trains are possible; the Д2 have automatic Japanese-style couplings for this purpose, which are not compatible with the other vehicles on Sakhalin.

The Д2 have a welded steel structure, the sheet metal is made of unpainted stainless steel. The passenger compartment is lined with melamine resin and contains the seats in a 2 + 2 arrangement.

commitment

The depot in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk uses a D2 as a local train to Novoderevenskaya , Bykow and Korsakow . The operations as a long-distance train to Tomari ended in April 2015.

From Cholmsk , a multiple unit serves the routes to stop 77 km (77 km; near Nikolaichuk ) and to Tomari.

In 2005 eight trains were still operational. The current number of operational D2s is not known. The trains used were put together from individual wagons from different trains.
