The SŽD series Щ эл 1 (German transcription : Shtsch el 1 ) is one of the first diesel locomotives of the Soviet railways (SŽD).

history

It was initially listed as ЮЭ2, with a view to the fact that there was already a ЮЭ1 locomotive . This name was chosen in honor of the designer of the ЮЭ1 Yuri Vladimirovich Lomonosov with the first name Yuri ( Юрий ). However, this fell out of favor when he left the Soviet Union permanently, and so his locomotive was initially renamed to " ЮЭ2 ", while the current Щ эл 1 was initially to be " ЮЭ1 ", then to Щ-эл-1 or ЩЭЛ 1 has been.

The machine was completed on August 5, 1924 in the Baltic plant in Leningrad based on the designs by Jakow Modestowitsch Gakkel . It was designed with ten driving axles and a single axle drive. The driving axles are distributed over three bogies, the end bogies also each have a wheel set . This results in the rare wheel sequence (1'Co) Do '(Co1').

In the operation of the SŽD the Щ эл 1 was used from 1925 to 1927 on the route Moscow - Kursk and the Caucasus . Due to frequent repairs, it was initially shut down and from 1934 onwards it was used as a power station to supply electricity.

The locomotive was erected as a memorial in front of the Khovrino depot of the October Railway in northern Moscow from 1972 . In 1997 it was handed over to the Museum of the October Railway , at that time still in Shushary in the south of Saint Petersburg. After the reopening of the museum in the former Warsaw train station in Saint Petersburg in 2001, it was exhibited there. After the track supply to the Warsaw train station was dismantled due to construction work, it moved to the new location of the Russian Railway Museum at the Baltic train station .
