The class Э эл 2 (German transcription : E el 2 , initially numbered as Ю э 001) is one of the first Soviet diesel locomotives of the Soviet Railways (SŽD). The abbreviation Э эл 2 denotes a diesel locomotive with electrical transmission and the series number "2". The vehicle was built under the direction and according to the plans of Yuri Wladimirowitsch Lomonossow in the workshops of the Esslingen machine works from 1923 to spring 1924.

For the production of the locomotive , Lomonossow was initially in contact with the Hohenzollern Corporation for Locomotive Construction . Regarding the history of its origins, it says: “Lomonossow finally ordered on his own from Hohenzollern AG in Düsseldorf. The procedure was subsequently approved by the Council of People's Commissars. But when the occupation of the Ruhr began in 1923 , Lomonossow made an additional agreement with Hohenzollern, according to which the construction of his favorite child - the diesel-electric locomotive - was assigned to the Esslingen machine factory. "

The first tests revealed some weak points in the design, which were then rectified. From February 1925, after extensive test drives , the Э эл 2 was regularly used in the operation of the SŽD.

It is considered to be the world's first operational mainline diesel locomotive. Although the design did not go into series production, it was the basis for further series of diesel locomotives of the SŽD.

A direct successor was the SŽD series Ээл , of which a total of 46 pieces were produced in series. Outwardly, it differed mainly through a two-axle running bogie instead of the single running axle under the front end and thus had the axle sequence 2'Eo1 '. A more powerful diesel engine was also used.
