Lionel Smith Beale (born February 5, 1828 in London , † March 28, 1906 there ) was a British doctor and microscopist. He is considered a pioneer in clinical pathology .

Live and act

Lionel Smith Beale was the only son of Lionel John Beale (1796–1871) and his Frances Smith, nee Sheppard (1800–1849). He had three sisters, including the artist Sarah Sophia Beale (1837-1920) and the landscape painter Ellen Brooker Beale (married Lloyd, 1831-1900). After attending Highgate School , Beale was taught at King's College School from the age of nine until 1844 . From the age of 13 he also started an apprenticeship with the pharmacist Joseph Ross from Islington . In 1845 Beale began studying medicine at King's College London and was enrolled at the University of London two years later . For two years he worked as assistant to Henry Wentworth Acland (1815-1900) at the Anatomical Museum of Christ Church . In 1849 Beale received his license from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries . For the Board of Health , he supervised in the same year the cholera - epidemic in Windsor. From 1850 to 1851 Beale worked as an assistant doctor at King's College Hospital and finally graduated as Medicinae Baccalaureus in 1851 .

In 1852 Beale set up a private laboratory near the hospital on Carey Street, where he taught novel methods of using microscopy in pathology . The following year he succeeded Robert Bentley Todd in the chair of physiology at King's College, where he shared duties with Todd's former assistant William Bowman for the first two years . He held this position until 1869. In 1859 he married Frances Blakiston († 1892), the only daughter of Reverend Peyton Blakiston (1801-1878). From 1857 to 1870 Beale published the journal Archives of Medicine . He later became a doctor at King's College Hospital and was appointed professor of medicine there in 1876. Beale held both positions until his illness-related retirement in 1896. From 1891 to 1904 he worked as a doctor for the Pensions Commutation Board and as a medical examiner for the government. Beale also prepared numerous reports for the Clerical and Medical Assurance Company .

Honors and memberships

Beale was elected a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1856 and became a Fellow in 1859. In 1877 and 1878 he was a member of the council, and in 1881 and 1882 censor. Beale was the museum's curator from 1876 to 1888. In 1871 he was awarded the Baly Medal for his physiological work. In 1875 Beale gave the Lumleian Lecture.

On June 11, 1857, Beale was accepted as a member of the Royal Society and held its Croonian Lecture in 1865. In 1852 Beale joined the Royal Microscopical Society . In 1879 and 1880 he was its president and treasurer from 1881 to 1890.

The Beale solution and the Beale cells are named after him.
