The locomotives of the class Э эл (German transcription E el ) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) were broad-gauge diesel locomotives of the first generation that were mass- produced on the basis of the Э эл 2 .
history
After 1924 with the Э эл 2 was first built an operationally suitable mainline diesel locomotive and tested was from the SZD a series production decided. After the production of two machines ( Э эл 5 in Germany and Э эл 9 in Russia ), experiences for further improvement were available, including the replacement of the running axle under the front end with a two-axle running bogie. After that, production of the Ээл type began in 1934 in the Kolomna locomotive factory , where 46 units of the Ээл type were built, including the two pre-series locomotives .
After first attempts on the Moscow-Kazan Railway , the locomotives were used at the Ashgabat depot in the Turkmen SSR, where they were supposed to replace the steam locomotive operation, which was suffering from problems with the water supply there. Diesel fuel , on the other hand, was abundant thanks to local oil production and refining .
However, problems soon arose in operation. Some construction elements of the locomotives were not yet fully developed and manufacturing defects were revealed. The diesel engines in particular were not particularly reliable and the staff lacked experience with the new technology. In addition, the superstructure of the Turkmen lines proved to be too weak for the axle load of the locomotives. Therefore, from 1937 onwards, the Turkmen railway administration did not put any further locomotives of this series into service. The last 18 copies already made were instead used as mobile power generators.
Due to the many unexpected failures, it was soon hardly possible to carry out the scheduled work. From 1948, the particularly vulnerable assemblies were therefore replaced. However, when properly operated and maintained, the locomotives were quite reliable. With the delivery of new diesel locomotive series in the mid-1960s, the last locomotives in the inventory of the Ashgabat depot were decommissioned.
