Andreas Trost (* 1657 in Deggendorf , Bavaria; † June 8, 1708 in Graz ) was a copperplate engraver who became known for his copperplate engravings with castles, towns and cities as motifs.

Life

Andreas Trost was born in 1657 in the medium-sized town of Deggendorf in Lower Bavaria. Soon, however, the engraver moved to Austria. From the year 1677 his stay in Graz can be proven.

In Graz, Trost worked with the topographer Georg Matthäus Vischer and was the main engraver of Vischer's topography of Styria. For this work by Vischer, Andreas Trost engraved more than 150 records. Even after Vischer's death, Trost continued to work on subsequent issues of the topography.

One of his main works was created around 1689. There, Trost worked with the Slovenian topographer Johann Weichard von Valvasor . In 1689 Valvasor brought out the "Topographia Archiducatus Carinthiae modernae", a description of the Archduchy of Carinthia, for which Trost made countless engravings. For this reason, Andreas Trost lived partly at Wagensberg Castle in Krain, where Valvasor set up a print shop.

Trost's views of Graz, which were made in 1699 and 1703, are also known.
