The S-13 refers to a family of unguided air-to-surface missiles in caliber 122 mm, which was developed by the Soviet Air Force for their fighter jets and helicopters and is still used by the Russian Air Force and in most of the CIS countries . The missile is primarily used to combat semi-hard and hard targets on the ground.

development

In the 1970s, the JSC Institute developed the rocket S-13 of applied physics to do with this weapon slopes of craters unusable and armored aircraft shelters to penetrate (hardened aircraft shelter) and bunkers. With a caliber between the widespread 80 mm S-8 missile and the 240 mm S-24 missile , it fulfills a role similar to that of the American 127 mm Zuni missile . The S-13 is conventionally constructed in a cylindrical shape and has a solid rocket propulsion system and folding wings that fold out after the tube has been launched. The first attempts began in 1973, but it was not until 1983 that the rocket could be put into service. Typically, five S-13 missiles are launched from a tubular B-13L launch container. The rocket is designed in such a way that it can still be used perfectly at −60 ° C and +60 ° C. The rocket can penetrate 1 m of reinforced concrete, covered by up to 3 m of earth, and generates 1500 to 1800 splinters when it explodes. If it hits a slope, it can tear open a crater of 20 m².
