Around ten young people, bathers at the Stephanikirchenweide river bathing establishment , founded the association in 1885, which in 1886 already had 28 members. In 1895 the youth department was established with 62 members. The Bremen Swimming Association, founded in 1893, consisted of the Weser, Oberweser, Poseidon and Hastedter SV clubs.
In 1906 a women's department was created. In 1911 the buildings in use burned down. From 1921 to 1923 the club was part of the Bremen Swimming Association . The members of SV Bremen 10 , which was forcibly dissolved during the Nazi era , joined SV Weser in 1933 and their clubhouse (destroyed in 1944) in Woltmershausen became part of SV Weser in 1934.

A new clubhouse was built in 1954 after renovations in the previous rooms of the Society for Public Pools. Around 1964 the great swimming successes were achieved by the Hettling siblings. In 1979 the clubhouse was completed after additions and demolished in 2004 and replaced by a new building by 2005.
