Ernst Küppers

Ernst Küppers (born July 9, 1904 in Viersen , † July 23, 1976 in Nordhorn ) was a German swimmer .

Küppers was German champion in the 100 m backstroke six times, from 1927 to 1930 for the Viersener swimming club 06 and in 1932 and 1933 for the SV Weser Bremen 1885 . He also swam five European records. He took part in the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 and in Los Angeles in 1932, where he was fifth as the fastest European. He was disqualified at the European Championships in Bologna in 1927 despite a large lead. At the European Championships in Magdeburg in 1934 he was second behind the British John Besford with 1: 12.2 min .

From 1953 he was manager of the then newly built Nordhorn indoor swimming pool and took over the sporting management of the Nordhorn water sports club, in which his son Ernst-Joachim also started. Under his training leadership, the Nordhorn water sports club swam over 50 German individual and relay records.

Küppers was married to Reni Erkens (German champion and Olympic participant 1928) and had two children, Margot and Ernst-Joachim (silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 1964 ).
