The Nordhorn indoor swimming pool on the Nordhorn town ring was inaugurated on June 26, 1953 and was the first new indoor swimming pool in Lower Saxony after the Second World War .

The building with its characteristic front facing the city ring and the pavilion , which was initially used as a milk bar and for a long time as an ice cream parlor , are listed buildings .

In September 2012, the indoor swimming pool complex was largely destroyed in a major fire. Only the front remained almost undamaged. In the early summer of 2013 it was decided not to rebuild the indoor swimming pool on the city ring. In 2016, the new indoor pool was opened at the outdoor pool at the sports park.

history

A new era dawned for water sports in Nordhorn and the surrounding area, especially for the Nordhorn (Waspo) water sports club , with the indoor swimming pool, which was inaugurated on June 26, 1953, in post-war Nordhorn.

The head of the indoor pool was Ernst Küppers , who also took over the sporting management of the Nordhorn water sports club, in which his son Ernst-Joachim Küppers also competed.

Until then, there was no permanent swimming pool in the rapidly growing district town with over 30,000 inhabitants, but only a river bathing establishment , located in a wide bend in the Vechte near the zoo . Professional swimming training also took place downstream of the Nordhorn Reiterbrücke , roughly where the Vechte flows into the Vechtesee today .

The once most modern bathroom in the county with more than 300,000 visitors in 1972, lost its attractiveness over time. In 1998 there were only 60 731 bathers. For the 50th anniversary in 2003, the Nordhorn City Council decided to modernize the pool. In 2004/2005, according to the plans of the architects Klemens Hölscher and Axel Winter from Osnabrück, partial gutting , extensive renovation and extensive renovations took place, essentially the construction of an extension structure with an open orientation towards the banks of the Vechte. The connection to the listed old building was achieved by a transparent glass joint, so that the historical building structures remained recognizable. Due to the transparent and open orientation of the building, the bathroom was visible from the outside, which should contribute to increasing the attractiveness and uniqueness of the entire facility. Around six million euros were invested. Among other things, a 32 meter long water slide as well as a fitness , wellness and sauna area were created . The reopening took place in October 2005.

In June 2012 the bath was temporarily closed as renovation work was pending. Among other things, the women's changing area was gutted and redesigned. On September 15, 2012, the facility should be reopened. On September 12th, when only the last work had to be done before the reopening, a smoldering fire in the roof structure developed into a major fire that damaged the building to the ground; People were not harmed. The pavilion with its ice cream parlor standing a few meters away remained undamaged. According to the investigations of the experts at the State Criminal Police Office, roofing work led to the fire in the roof structure.

The annex, built in 2004 but completely burnt out, was removed after the fire. The original building was extensively renovated and rebuilt. The headquarters of the local housing association Gewo has been located in the former indoor swimming pool since 2017.

Indoor swimming pool

Due to the difference in height between the street (city ring) and the building site, the new indoor swimming pool had the special feature that, in the interests of economic construction costs, the swimming pool was placed in the middle floor between the ground floor and the first floor and a spacious staircase was created that connected the floors . The entrance area of the swimming pool was thus on the ground floor, the changing rooms on the upper floor; to swim in the middle floor. As a result, the facility was practically unusable for the handicapped. The internal stairs and dark pillar cladding were made of marble from the Upper Palatinate and Belgium. In addition to the 25-meter indoor pool, the facility also had an outdoor pool for children and a lawn for sunbathing on the banks of the Vechte with direct access to the restaurant in the pavilion.

pavilion

The pavilion is located between the indoor swimming pool and the Vechte bank, slightly offset from the city ring. In February 1954 the local daily newspaper, the Grafschafter Nachrichten , praised the pavilion as an “urban and architectural sight” , “with an interior that is the most perfect and modern in this area that is available today”. Not only was the external shape unusual for the post-war Nordhorn, but also its use. The Nordhorn master baker Röttgers ran a pastry shop there and Nordhorn's first “milk bar”. At the end of the 1960s, it became the “Eiscafé Italia” until it closed in 2017. The building has undergone a series of alterations and renovations, but has retained its basic character from the 1950s.
