Eldon Dyer

(Sherman) Eldon Dyer (* 1929 in Texas ; † October 26, 1993 in Katonah , New York ) was an American mathematician who studied algebraic topology .

Dyer received his doctorate in 1952 from the University of Texas at Austin with Robert Lee Moore (Certain conditions under which the sum of the elements of a continuous collection of continua is an arc). In 1960 he became a Sloan Research Fellow . He taught at the University of Georgia , Johns Hopkins University , the University of Chicago and Rice University before becoming a professor at the City University of New York in 1966 . In 1971 he became a Distinguished Professor there.

In 1956/57 and 1973/74 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

He was a long-time mathematician at the Encyclopædia Britannica .

His PhD students included Jack Morava and Robion Kirby .
