The Am 841 is a diesel locomotive of the Swiss Federal Railways ( SBB ). The vehicles were manufactured by GEC Alsthom Transport SA in Valencia as the GA-DE 900 / AS series. Alsthom had already delivered it to the Spanish state railways RENFE as class 311 . The difference to the 311 series is small (basically different track widths and, among other things, the safety control ). A total of 40 copies were purchased between 1996 and 1997.

history

At the beginning of the 1990s, SBB had a need for a diesel locomotive to move heavy construction trains that could generate a high level of tractive effort in the low speed range. This area could not be adequately covered with the existing diesel locomotives, as the suitable locomotives Bm 4/4 and Bm 6/6 were required for other tasks, and the Am 4/4 (formerly DB series V 200.0 ) not satisfied. It was therefore decided to buy new diesel locomotives in the medium power range, which, in addition to construction trains, are also suitable for light freight trains in mainline service (delivery trips across several stations). The first 30 locomotives were ordered after an international tender in 1994; this order was increased by ten in 1996.

technology

It is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive with a Bo'Bo 'wheel arrangement and a central driver's cab.

An MTU type 8V 396 TB 14 diesel engine is used as the traction motor. It is a single-acting four-stroke diesel engine with direct injection and exhaust gas turbocharging. The cylinders are arranged in a V-shape at an angle of 90 °. The engine is water-cooled and has a cylinder bore of 165 mm with a piston stroke of 185 mm, resulting in a total displacement of 31.6 liters. The compression ratio is 13.5: 1. The engine is directly connected to the three-phase main generator, the auxiliary generator and two hydrostatic pumps. The cooling water is brought to the operating temperature of 40 ° with a pre-heater.

The four traction motors are designed as asynchronous motors with a three-phase supply and are fed with variable voltage and frequency.

They have radio remote control and can also be controlled multiple times, i. H. up to three Am 841 can be operated together from one driver's cab. Multiple control is only possible with one another and with no other series of locomotives or control cars.

The locomotives are fully suitable for routes, because all locomotives have been delivered with the Signum and ZUB train control systems . The Eurobalise Transmission Module (ETM) for receiving information from Eurobalises and Euroloops has been retrofitted in all vehicles ( ETCS Level 1 ). Some locomotives even have the full ETCS Level 2 and can therefore also be used on new lines.

Operational use

Although twelve locomotives are actually assigned to the Cargo Division, they are mainly used by the Infrastructure Division for construction trains. Two ETCS-compatible locomotives are required for the auxiliary car of the fire-fighting and rescue train Olten, and they are also intended as tow locomotives for the new line.
