technology

The shunting tractors have a covered loading area for material transport and a spacious, closed driver's cab. The Saurer diesel engine develops an output of 70 kW, the maximum speed is 45 km / h. The engine drives both axles via a mechanical transmission and chains. The Aebi factory type designation was 95 SA3 RS.

Deliveries

e.g. Tm II 172 598 in Stansstad
Tm II 236 001 of the SOB in Herisau
Tm II 849 in Frauenfeld

A pre-series of the Tm II with a gasoline-powered engine and an output of just 30 kW, which was supplied by RACO in 1948 and 1949 as SBB Tm 535-542, was followed by around 250 vehicles of the reinforced, standardized design by Robert between 1950 and 1969 Aebi in Regensdorf were delivered to the Swiss Federal Railways. The petrol engines of the pre-production vehicles were replaced by diesel engines in the 1960s.

Two vehicles were delivered by RACO to the Bodensee-Toggenburg-Bahn (BT) in 1962 as BT TM II 1 and 2, and have been classified as SOB Tm 236 001 and 002 since the merger to form the Südostbahn (SOB).

In addition to the pure adhesion tractors SBB Tm II 596-598 and Tm II 981-983, two vehicles for adhesion and cogwheel operation also went to the SBB- Brünigbahn . They were put into service in 1965 and were given the series designation SBB Tmh 985 and 986. With 120 kW they had a much more powerful engine. These could be driven on the cogwheel route with a maximum speed of 27 km / h, in adhesion mode with a maximum of 40 km / h. They were sold to the Furka Mountain Line Steam Railway (DFB) in 2004 .

SBB Tm II 596-598 and Tm II 981-983 went with the takeover of the Brünigbahn from the SBB to the Zentralbahn in Meiringen. Tm II 596 was later sold to the regional transport company Regionalverkehr Bern – Solothurn (RBS) for their workshop service in Worbboden. It was completely restored there in 2002 and is called RBS Tm 2/2 161.

In the 1980s, two Tm II 980 (ex Tm II 709) and 984 (ex Tm II 828) converted from standard gauge were added to the Brünig Railway (see also the whereabouts section).

In addition to the Tm 101 acquired from SBB, Zentralbahn now also uses a similar shunting tractor built in 1961 with the factory type designation 100 DA3 HT . It was delivered in 1961 in 1000 mm gauge - initially known as the StEB Tm 51 - directly to the Stansstad – Engelberg Railway (StEB). After the change of name to Lucerne – Stans – Engelberg-Bahn (LSE) in 1964 and the takeover of the Brünigbahn, it is included in the Zentralbahn as Tm 102.

commitment

Tm II 98 85 5 230 864-1 in Triengen

Originally, the tractors were used in construction work, towards the end of their service life they were only available in station service or as a reserve for winter services. With the introduction of new type designations , the Tm II of the State Railways was designated as the 230 series while retaining the serial number; the tractors of the private railways received two digits in the third and fourth positions to identify the owner. With the introduction of twelve-digit numbers in 2005, 98 85 5 230 was supplemented by the original serial number. This official designation was actually written on only a few vehicles in the following years. On January 1, 2008, the SBB still had 36 vehicles. Almost all tractors of this type are currently retired from the Swiss Federal Railways. Only the SBB Tm II 816 in the Passenger Transport Division and SBB Tm II 635 and 647 in the Infrastructure Division remain.

Whereabouts

The pre-series vehicles were sold to factory and private railways until 1982, SBB Tm 536 went to the Sihl Valley-Zurich-Uetliberg-Bahn (SZU) in 1980 , where it was classified as Tm 2/2 10 (second line-up). It still received the computer number 236 510 and has been retained by the Zurich Museum Railway (ZMB).

Some of the tractors of the standardized design went to works and museum railways after the end of their service life.

Tm II 611 was only withdrawn from service in 2012 and has been preserved by the SBB Historic Heritage Foundation (SBB Historic).

Tm II 617 and Tm II 797 remained with the Fricktal Draisinen Sammlung (DSF).

Tm II 631 with equipment for the winter clearance service was erected as a memorial at the entrance to the round engine shed in Sargans.

Tm II 635 was still listed as one of the last tractors of this type and was still in use at the marshalling yard depot in Zurich / Limmattal at the end of 2016.

Tm II 663 was sold to the Mittelthurgau Railway (MThB) and was used there as Tm 236 647-4. It was later sold to Winpro AG (from 2005 Stadler Winterthur AG) in Winterthur.

Tm II 685 went to EW Nostalgie as Tm 98 85 5 230 685-0 CH-MJA (internal Tm II 230 685). Together with Tm II 794, 801 and 815 he is on the Etzwilen – Singen museum railway.

Tm II 700 was retired in February 2002 and sold to Regionalverkehr Mittelland (RM). There it was called Tm 236 342-2 and came to the new BLS AG in June 2006 through the merger of Regionalverkehr Mittelland AG with BLS Lötschbergbahn (BLS). He kept his number and was henceforth classified as BLS Tm 236 342-2. In 2011 he finally left BLS and was sold to LSB Lok Service Burkhardt AG in Hinwil. In September 2016 it was still parked on their sidings in neighboring Rüti. In November 2017 he was sold to the training company viafier by niggli, where he is used for the VTE 10 trainings.

Tm II 709 was converted to narrow gauge for the SBB-Brünigbahn in 1987 and carried on to the name Tm II 980. In 2010 it was taken over by the Meiringen-Innertkirchen-Bahn (MIB), which gave it the number 10 and only one year later passed on to the museum railway La Traction as Tm II 10.

Tm II 734 went to the Lucerne-Stans-Engelberg-Bahn (LSE) as Tm 101 after its gauge change to 1000 mm in 1995 and, through its merger with the Brünigbahn, also became part of the Zentralbahn.

Tm II 751 was sold as a shunting locomotive to STAG Bahnwagen-Service in Sargans and bears the number Tm 98 85 5 230 751-0 CH-BWSHO.

Tm II 758 from SBB Historic is stationed in the Brugg Railway Park.

Tm II 770 went to Holcim and is used in its Sargans branch in the former locomotive depot to move freight wagons that are maintained there.

Tm II 806 was one of the 36 tractors that were still in stock in 2008 and was later sold to Tensol Rail in Giornico for factory relocation.

Tm II 813 of the «Mikado 1244» association is permanently located in the Brugg railway park.

Tm II 816 was handed over to SBB Industriewerk Biel / Bienne in November 2008 for internal factory relocation. It was still there in August 2014.

Tm II 828 was re-gauged to 1000 mm for use on the Brünigbahn in 1983 and was initially designated as Tm II 984. When it was taken over by Zentralbahn, it was given the number Tm 172 984. In September 2014, this vehicle was prepared as a monument by Shiptec AG from Lucerne and placed at the Apart Hotel in Rotkreuz. The interior was provided with a bar.

Tm II 849 is used today for shunting in the workshop of the Stauffer rail and special vehicles in Frauenfeld and received the UIC number 98 85 5 230 849-2 CH-JÜST.

The Tm II with the computer number 98 85 5 230 864-1 of unknown origin now belongs to the Sursee-Triengen-Bahn. It has been given a pearl-violet paint and is internally referred to as "Violettina". In winter, snow plows are mounted on both sides to clear the Hinwil-Bauma route and are then stationed in Bäretswil.
