SED Systems Ltd. is a subsidiary of the Canadian company Calian Technologies Ltd. headquartered in the Innovation Park in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan . SED Systems plans, designs and builds communication solutions for space agencies , satellite manufacturers and satellite operators.

history

SED emerged from the Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies (ISAS) at the University of Saskatchewan in 1965. In 1965 a department (SED) was founded which is specifically concerned with researching new technologies. In 1967, the first launch with a payload developed by SED took place on the Fort Churchill rocket launch site , Manitoba . Between 1965 and 1989 a total of 65 payloads with systems developed by SED were launched from Fort Churchill.

In 1972, SED delivered the first ground station for the first Canadian communications satellite. By converting the Prince Albert Radar Laboratory into a satellite tracking station, the facility also became SED's first ground station for the next 16 years. The first images from the Landsat satellite were received through this system . In the same year SED was spun off to a private company and renamed SED Systems.

1977–1981 SED Systems installed a geo-synchronous satellite communication system Eureka , 81 degrees north, at the northernmost location . SED Systems began setting up satellite tests and ground control equipment in partnership with Hughes Aircraft Company. The cooperation exists today with Boeing Satellite Systems. SED Systems began working with Telesat Canada to provide satellite tracking systems in Canada and Guam . The company was reorganized and transformed into SED Systems Inc.

1982–1986 the company offered the first ground control systems for Brazil's first communication satellites. SED Systems won the Canadian Department of Transportation's tender for new equipment in aviation. The company equipped all of Canada with new, modern flight control systems for the civil sector.

In the following years (1986–1990) the company had four divisions. These include Satellite Ground Systems , Defense and Government Systems , Custom Manufacturing and Space Programs . SED's supra-thermal mass spectrometer is used on the Japanese satellite AKEBONO. In 1990 SED Systems was acquired by Calian Technology Corporation.

1991–2000 SED Systems established itself as the world market leader in the field of in-orbit tests. The company supplies systems for KoreaSat , ICO, Thuraya , Mabuhay and Telenor. WorldSpace Corporation signed a contract with SED Systems to provide systems for the first digital radio service via satellite. The company develops and constructs a satellite system for the Canadian military. SED Systems received the largest order in history from the European Space Agency (ESA) to build a 35-meter mirror for the deep space antenna system.

In 2000–2008, the company received several satellite control contracts, including Radarsat-2 , another from the CIEL Satellite Group . Due to the success and problem-free use of ESA's first 35-meter communication mirror, the company was awarded the contract to build a second 35-meter parabolic antenna for ESA in Spain.
