The transmitter / receiver, module 52 S , SEM 52 S for short, is a handheld radio that is used by the Bundeswehr . It was introduced in 1984 and eventually replaced the SEM 52 A instead of the "SEM 53" developed as a sample in 1972 . A total of over 30,000 SEM 52 S were procured for all branches of the armed forces.

The device can only send and receive alternately on one channel, since it is an intercom . A loudspeaker microphone is attached to the top, but a headset can also be used. With an additional device it is also possible to send and receive data. The power consumption was given as 70 mA for reception and 400 mA for transmission.

Several variants are known. At least two of them were used in the Bundeswehr. The SEM 52-S / 46 and 52-S / FZ / 46 . In 1985 the police received individual pieces of the SEM 52-S for testing. The SEM 52-S / FZ / 46 is intended for installation in vehicles and does not have the energy-saving function of the SEM 52-S / 46. The FZH 52-S vehicle holder is used for this purpose and offers connection options for the on-board communication system, old and new handsets, data devices and the FAF-80 vehicle antenna. The transmission power can be switched between 0.05 W and 1 W in the vehicle holder. The SEM 52-S / FZ / 46 is less suitable as a handheld radio due to the short battery life.

The SEM 52 S was replaced by the successor model SEM 52 SL in the Bundeswehr in 1995 , but is still in use and is still being serviced and repaired.
