SETA (foundation)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seta (Turkish: Siyaset, Ekonomi ve Toplum Araştırmaları Vakfı, SETA ) is a Turkish scientific organization. The think tank publishes studies on political, social and economic issues in Turkey. Seta is close to the conservative Turkish Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP) and is considered their scientific mouthpiece. Burhanettin Duran has been director of the organization since 2014 .

structure

Seta was founded in 2005. Ibrahim Kalin was the founding director until 2009 . Kalin has been President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's foreign policy advisor since 2009 .

According to its self-portrayal, the foundation is independent and impartial. Seta is based in Istanbul. The organization has offices in Washington, DC , Cairo and Berlin . Zafer Meşe (CDU) heads the Berlin office.

job

Seta publishes analyzes and reports on the political, economic and social development of Turkey and the situation of Turks abroad. Another aspect is Turkey's position in international relations. The Insight Turkey magazine is published regularly . Seta employees are available to the international media as experts.

At the beginning of July 2019, Seta published a 200-page report entitled "International Media Outlets' Extensions in Turkey". The report sparked controversial reactions in Turkey and abroad. In the report, data on the person, career and work of journalists working in Turkey are published. Journalists from a number of international media outlets such as the Turkish service of Euronews , BBC Turkish, Deutsche Welle Turkish, Voice of America , Sputnik Turkey, Radio China International Turkey and The Independent Turkish are detailed. The Seta report accuses them of pursuing an “agenda” against the Turkish AKP government and of being “left and secular”.

In October 2019 Seta published the "European Islamophobia Report 2018" together with Farid Hafez and Enes Bayrakli . The report was paid for by the European Union. Critics like Amer Albayati and Seyran Ates saw the report as an attempt by the Turkish ruling party AKP to exert influence in Europe, intimidate critics and pave the way for political Islam.

rating

Oliver Mayer-Rüth from ARD-Studio Istanbul wrote in 2019 that Seta employees would make no secret of the fact that their "political studies in most cases ideologically support positions of the ruling party AKP and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan." However, they tried hard to argue scientifically.
