Life

Childhood and Adolescence in Iraq

Amer Albayati grew up as the second son with four brothers and one sister in a middle-class family in Baghdad . The parents Abdulakir Albayati and Wafiqa Ibn Siminah ran a restaurant. In middle school Albayati was active for the school newspaper; at the age of 15 he was a junior editor for various Iraqi daily newspapers. After the first Iraqi revolution in 1958 he was given access to world literature in his uncle's library and read authors such as Goethe , Kant , Sartre and Marx .

Worked as a photographer - studied at the University of Film and Television

In the early 1960s Albayati moved to West Berlin , where he earned his living as a freelance photographer on Berlin's cultural scene. From 1965 he studied at the Konrad Wolf Academy for Film and Television in East Berlin. His girlfriend Brigitte at the time gave birth to their daughter Ines in 1968. After visiting a sick man, the Iraqi authorities refused to leave him on the grounds that his military service had not yet been completed. As a result of the subsequent escape attempt, Albayati was arrested and transferred to a prison in Basra .

Activity as a film director

Freed again, Albayati had to set up a new life in Baghdad . In the following years he worked as a film and television director for various Iraqi media companies. In addition, he built up additional pillars with a bespoke tailoring shop, an antiques shop and a hairdressing salon in Baghdad. When one of his films was banned by the censors of the newly come to power Saddam Hussein , he fled Iraq in 1980.

Activity as an Islam expert

Amer Albayati is often invited to participate in television debates and panel discussions as an expert. He warns of the danger of political Islam for European societies and of the proliferation of Islamist organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood in Western countries. He repeatedly spoke out against the wearing of the Muslim headscarf and for the ban on Islamic kindergartens. In particular, Albayati criticizes the controversial Islamic Faith Community in Austria (IGGiÖ) because it has a right to represent, although it only represents a small part of the now more than 900,000 Muslims in Austria and often protects hate preachers. Albayati comments on current developments in guest comments for the Wiener Zeitung and Die Presse, among others .

In October 2016 he participated as a speaker at the 7th Conference on Global Citizen Education: New Paths to Social Inclusion for Safer Cities at the House of the European Union in Vienna.

Foundation of the ILMÖ - Initiative of Liberal Muslims in Austria

In 2007 the ILMÖ - Initiative of Liberal Muslims Austria was founded, of which Albayati has been President and Chairman since then. As part of the ILMÖ, Albayati has repeatedly campaigned for a reformed Islam and an education about radical Islam and jihadism .

Criticism of the Saudi King Abdullah Center in Vienna

In 2015 Albayati supported with the ILMÖ and the Austrian party Die Grünen the demand of Ensaf Haidar, the wife of the imprisoned Saudi blogger Raif Badawi , after his release and the closure of the controversial King Abdullah Center in Vienna: Austria vacate an "undemocratic regime" and a “Wahhabi ultra-sect” the possibility of counterproductive effects on Muslims. Nobody wants to see that radical elements of Islam are growing.

Death threats and lives under police protection

According to a guest comment in the daily newspaper Die Presse in 2011, Albayati received over a dozen serious death threats from the radical Islamist scene, including from the Austro jihadist Firas H., who emigrated to ISIS, and has been under police protection around the clock .

Non-fiction book "On the death list of IS"

In 2016 the Viennese Seifert Verlag published his non-fiction book "On the death list of IS: An Islam insider & reformer as a border crosser against radicalism and terrorism", which, in addition to autobiographical features, deals with the dangers of radical Islam , jihadism and the urgency of a liberal and reformist Islam busy.
