SETI institute

The SETI Institute ( S earch for E xtra t errestrial I ntelligence ) is a non-profit , non-governmental organization that deals with the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life . It was founded on November 20, 1984 as a private not-for-profit company and is supported by a variety of sponsors. These include B. NASA , but also companies like Hewlett-Packard . Its headquarters are in Mountain View, Santa Clara County .

The aim of the institute is to research, understand and explain the origin of nature and life in the universe. Radio telescopes are used for this. In early 2011, the institute had to interrupt research with the Allen Telescope Array due to lack of funds . Research with the ATA was continued in November 2011 after further funding was secured from private donors and the Air Force Space Command .

In 2015, the Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner donated US $ 100 million for SETI research.

The institute is a project participant of NEOShield .
