NEOShield was an international, EU- funded initiative to explore ways in which planetary defense might look if humanity is threatened by Near Earth Objects (NEO) . The primary research purpose was to investigate possible methods of asteroid defense. The studies began in January 2012.

The follow-up project NEOShield 2 started in March 2015 .

Project participant

Scientists and research institutions from European countries as well as Russia and the United States took part in the international research project.

Involved were u. a. Astrium (Germany, France and UK), Deimos Space (Spain), Queen's University Belfast (UK), the Paris Observatory (France), the Center national de la recherche scientifique (France), the Open University (UK), the ZNIImasch (Russia), the SETI Institute (USA), the University of Surrey (UK) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Short Term Dynamics (Germany).

The project coordinator was the German space agency DLR .

financing

NEOShield was funded with 4 million euros from the EU FP7 program and should run until mid-2015. Another 1.8 million euros should be raised by the participating research institutions.
