The B612 Foundation is a non-profit , non-governmental organization and foundation that has set itself the task of researching near-earth objects , protecting the earth from an impact and developing a possible asteroid defense . The foundation was founded in October 2001 at a workshop at the NASA Johnson Space Center by the astrophysicist Piet Hut and the former astronaut Edward Tsang Lu . Other members include a. the former astronaut Russell Louis Schweickart and the astronomer Harold Reitsema . The foundation was named after the fictional asteroid B612 from the short story The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry .

In summer 2012, the organization announced plans for a space mission called SENTINEL (Guardian). The aim of the mission is to put a space telescope with a Falcon launcher into orbit around the sun by 2017 . With the infrared space telescope it should be possible to discover potentially dangerous earth orbit cruisers. The telescope is being built by Ball Aerospace .
