SIM Instant Messenger ( SIM-IM ) is a free instant messenger for various protocols. It is available for Linux , Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X and is based on the Qt library .

SIM-IM was originally developed by Vladimir Shutoff under the name SIM ( Simple Instant Messenger ).

Functions

SIM-IM supports the protocols of the services AIM , ICQ , XMPP , MSN and YIM , LiveJournal and is available in several languages . It is also possible to connect via several profiles of a protocol at the same time (e.g. with three ICQ numbers at the same time).

A special feature of SIM-IM, which the official ICQ client did not have, was the display of contacts who had set their status to "invisible" and would normally appear as "offline". After a protocol update by AOL, this function is currently no longer available.

SIM-IM also shows very detailed information about the contacts, such as the name and version of the client used , IP addresses , etc. Another function is the integrated network monitor, which can display log, debugging and event information.

SIM-IM has many functions that are usually missing in comparable clients. The appearance of the contact list can be freely changed and can be provided with your own background image. An OSD ( On Screen Display ) can be set, which shows, for example, contacts coming online and the complete messages of other users. This means that it is not necessary to open the message window to read new messages, as they appear briefly on the OSD, which is particularly useful when you are running another application and don't always want to switch to the chat window.

Another difference compared to the normal ICQ or the other official clients and most of the alternatives is that it is possible to add contacts to the contact list without authorization and the addition of the respective contacts is not displayed. Since a protocol change in November 2007, the status of unauthorized contacts is no longer displayed. However, you can still write and receive messages.

Automatic text replacement is a special feature. It is possible to define individual combinations of letters and words that are automatically replaced by others. Frequent typing errors can be automatically eliminated (replace “acuh” with “also”) or abbreviations defined (replace “iwie” with “somehow”).

Current

After Vladimir Shutoff left the project after version 0.9.3, development stood still for a long time. The project was split up ( fork ) and further developed by other programmers under the new name SIM-IM . After two release candidates in February and May 2006, the first edition (version 0.9.4) of this fork was published on June 29, 2006.

No changes have been made to the project's GIT since December 22, 2013. The project currently (as of August 11, 2013) has no active developers.
