The locomotives of the SJ F series were express train electric locomotives of the Swedish State Railways Statens Järnvägar with the wheel arrangement 1'Do 1 ' put into operation from 1942 .

history

The Västra stambana was electrified between Stockholm and Gothenburg until 1926. During the 1930s it was expanded for the speed of 120 km / h.

At that time the SJ did not have a locomotive for this speed. This is how the new F series was created at Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA) . From 1863 to 1886 there was the C-coupled steam locomotive series SJ F (I) and from 1914 to 1937 a 2'C 1'h4v express steam locomotive had the designation F (II) .

First of all, in 1942 the SJ ordered three sample copies with different forms of power transmission, which were followed by a series of 21 machines from 1945 to 1949. The locomotives were used to transport express trains on the Malmö – Stockholm, Malmö – Gothenburg, Gothenburg – Stockholm and Stockholm – Oslo routes.

From the end of the 1960s and during the 1970s, they were pushed out of these areas of use by the new SJ Rc series . Most of the locomotives were retired between 1978 and 1983, the last of them were used in the Stockholm area. In the last period of use, its top speed was reduced from 135 km / h to 100 km / h.

Preserved locomotives

Three locomotives have been preserved. The F 621 is in the Swedish Railway Museum (Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum) in Gävle, the F 696 and F 701 have been taken over by the Stockholm Cultural Society for Steam Engines and Railways (Stockholms Kultursällskap för Ånga och Järnväg) .
