The locomotives of the series SM31 of the Polish State Railways (PKP) are diesel locomotives for the transport of freight trains and for shunting.

From 1973 , Fablok in Chrzanów developed a shunting diesel locomotive based on the SM42 series under the type designation 411D . In 1976, two prototypes were completed as the SM31-001 and -002. In contrast to the SM42, the SM31 was designed as a six-axle locomotive with a higher output. The two prototypes were not taken over by the PKP, but handed over to industrial companies.

Series production began with the SM31-003. By 1985, 167 SM31s had been delivered to PKP. Another 28 identically constructed locomotives were built for industrial companies under the designation LS1200. One of them came to the PKP as SM31-170. In parallel to the Ls1200, Polish industrial railways were supplied with the TEM2 type corresponding to the SM48 series and the S200 type corresponding to the T 669.0 series of the Czechoslovak State Railways .

Some SM31 have already been taken out of service. In 2007, there were still 112 SM31s in the PKP portfolio and in the entire network with transfer trains and as shunting locomotives.
