The locomotives of the SM48 series of Polish State Railways (PKP) are diesel locomotives for the transport of freight trains and for shunting.

PKP series SM48

Diesel- electric locomotives of the ТЭМ2 series for the Soviet railways (SŽD) have been built at the Bryansk mechanical engineering factory in Brjansk ( Soviet Union ) since 1960 . From 1974 these were delivered to Polish industrial railways under the name TEM2 . The PKP received this type from 1976 and referred to it as the SM48 series. The locomotives built for the PKP differ from the series ТЭМ2 by a slightly shorter length of 16,970 instead of 17,029 mm.

86 SM48s were built from 1976 to 1978. Another TEM2 built in 1982 from industrial stocks came to the PKP in 1983 as SM48-087. Only in 1987 and 1988 did the PKP receive a further 43 SM48s. Part of the SM48 was procured in the Soviet broad gauge ( gauge 1524 mm) for the Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa between Sławków (near Będzin ) and the border with the Soviet Union (now Ukraine ) near Hrubieszów .

Some SM48 have already been taken out of service. In 2007, 118 SM48s were still in use by PKP and in the east of Poland with transfer trains and as shunting locomotives.

Some locomotives were converted to type 15D or 16D (broad gauge) at Newag , whereby only bogies, traction motors and main frames are used by the donor locomotive. A 1550 kW Type 3512C from Caterpillar is used. The modernized locomotives are equipped with air conditioning.

TEM2 for industrial railways

Between 1974 and 1989 a total of 310 TEM2 were delivered to Polish industrial railways. With a length of 17.029 mm, they correspond to the standard version.

Parallel to the TEM2, Polish industrial railways were supplied with the type Ls1200 corresponding to the series SM31 and the type S200 corresponding to the series T 669.0 of the Czechoslovak State Railways .
