history

On June 8, 1978, SMC Pneumatik GmbH was founded in Frankfurt am Main as a German subsidiary of SMC Corporation and initially employed five people. After a short time, the company developed into a leading expert in pneumatic automation technology in Germany , which made it necessary to expand the business premises in 1984 and move to Egelsbach . In addition to a larger office building, a modern production hall was also built on the premises.

Change of location to Egelsbach in 1984

In the 1990s, due to a new product policy, the range was expanded beyond pneumatics , the portfolio was expanded, for example, to include electric drives as well as cooling and temperature control devices and was continuously expanded in the years that followed. Numerous initial certifications according to the ISO standard also followed .

In 2008 the German Technical Center, or GTC for short, was founded. In addition to the technology centers in Japan, China, Great Britain and the USA, it is the fifth SMC location for developing special products or assemblies according to specific customer requirements and tasks.

In the course of the 2000s, the company not only exceeded the sales threshold of 100 million euros for the first time, it also brought product innovations in servo-pneumatics and fieldbus technology onto the market.

On June 1, 2017, SMC Pneumatik GmbH became SMC Deutschland GmbH, as the product range goes beyond pneumatics and covers industry-specific topics such as energy saving, Industry 4.0 or machine safety.

SMC Industrial Application Center (IAC)

In the Innovation and Competence Center Industrial Application Center (IAC), SMC simulates future-oriented, intelligent automation solutions together with customers. A wide variety of tasks and production options are simulated and tested in different units.

SMC Industrial Application Center - IAC

Unit 1 - Energy and Technology

The more resource-saving and cost-conscious use of energy for technical systems is increasingly in the focus of automation. SMC wants to support the development of the most modern measurement technology and works out realistic statements about the energy used in the IAC.

Unit 2 - Industry 4.0

Optimizing productivity and order control is a component of future automation processes. With regard to Industry 4.0, significant increases in productivity are forecast for the manufacturing industry in the coming years. In this context, the IAC considers applications with regard to their simple diagnostic options, increased productivity, high flexibility and low downtimes.

Unit 3 - Ergonomic Handling

In UNIT 3, practical tests for ergonomic and safe lifting and moving of heavy loads are carried out. Pneumatic energy is used here, while intelligent sensors help to automatically detect changing loads. With modern handling technology, heavy work can be supported, the health of employees improved, travel times shortened, intuitive work processes promoted and short cycle times observed.

Unit 4 - Security

In this area of the IAC, the focus is on the professional and safe placing of machines on the market. In addition to hazard analyzes and risk assessments, a design of safe controls in accordance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42 / EC is required by law. ISO 13849 deals with safety-related parts and their design principles for control systems, for which SMC offers validated pneumatic components for generating circuits of various categories. Sample circuits for various safety functions can be built from prefabricated switchboards. This allows all specifications to be simulated appropriately. The open spaces and workbenches available for this purpose can be used to check a real machine part of the customer.

German Technical Center (GTC)

The GTC is part of a total of five SMC Technical Centers worldwide, alongside the centers in Japan, China, Great Britain and the USA. The task here is to develop specific customer solutions and product modifications. In addition, the engineers support the customer's own planning and development departments.
