The torpedo boat SMS Tapfer belonged to the Schütze class , was built by AG Weser in 1882 , put into service in 1883 and had a crew of 13 men. With a length of 32.5 m, width of 3.9 m and a draft of 2.25 m, it had a weight of 56 tons. It was propelled by a triple expansion engine with around 500 PSi at 365 min −1 , and the boat ran around 17 knots. With the bunker stock of 8.2 t, the range was 750 nautical miles at 10 knots or 110 nautical miles at 16 knots.

It was armed with two torpedo tubes with a diameter of 35 cm. The torpedo boat Brave was used as a school boat and also as a mine-layer and port torpedo boat. It was removed from the list of warships in 1890, then used as a target boat and scrapped in 1900.
