List of ships of the Imperial Navy
The list of ships of the Imperial Navy contains the warships of the German Imperial Navy (1871-1918), as far as they had a name. Units that only had a number as an identifier are kept in separate lists . Auxiliary ships that did not have a military command are not mentioned here.
The ships are sorted alphabetically according to the names they were given when they were launched or when they were taken over into the Navy. Later name changes, as long as they were made during service in the Imperial Navy, are noted under "whereabouts". A ship is not mentioned several times under different names.
The type of ship is given for each ship. These designations changed several times in the course of the history of the Imperial Navy. Thus, at the end of 1884, the ships previously known as smooth-deck corvettes were re-listed as cruiser corvettes , while the covered corvettes were henceforth called cruiser frigates . Another change took place in 1893, both the armored ships and the cruisers were divided into four classes each. A last reclassification took place in 1899 in connection with the passage of the First Fleet Act . The majority of the armored ships, with the exception of the armored ships of the IV class, which were run as coastal armored ships, were newly classified as ships of the line . The first class cruisers as well as part of the second class cruisers and the armored ships were combined to form the large cruiser type , the remaining second class cruisers, the III cruisers. and IV. Class as well as the Avisos formed the type of the small cruiser .
The exact reproduction of all type classifications for every ship is not possible within the scope of this list. The typifications of the years 1884 and 1899 are therefore used, with the older designation being given priority if a ship has passed through both schemes. For example, the units of the Sachsen class were classified as armored ships in 1884 and as ships of the line in 1899, but are referred to as armored ships in this list. The old type address is only used for ships that were decommissioned before or shortly after the reorganization in 1884 or were transferred to a separate group, for example the training ships . For the armored ships and cruisers built between 1893 and 1898 the names valid from 1899 are used. Exceptions are the ships of the Swallow - and Bussard class that partially built before 1893, originally as a vehicle IV class. Were called. This designation is not used in this list, the ships are instead named according to the classification of 1899 as small cruisers. Even with the units of the Albatross - and the hawk class which used 1884-1893 term is Kreuzer not applied because they were classified as gunboats both before and after this period.
Furthermore , the class to which the ship in question belongs is specified for each ship, unless it is a merchant ship that has been taken over . The classes are usually named after the first ship launched. Ships that do not belong to any class are marked as single ships .
The indication of the year of commissioning refers to the takeover in the Imperial Navy. In the case of ships that were built and put into service before the founding of the Reich , the information refers to the acceptance into the Reichsflotte , the Prussian Navy or the Navy of the North German Confederation . The civil commissioning of merchant ships, which were confiscated by the Imperial Navy and used as auxiliary ships, especially during the First World War , is not included in this list.
The indication of the displacement is given in metric tons . The weight of the fully equipped ship is given. In a few cases this has not yet been determined; Particularly for some of the auxiliary vessels, information is only available in gross register tons . Since this is a measure of space and not a weight specification, this information is not reproduced.

Footnotes
- ↑ a b c d The actual type ship of the class is the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm , but the name of the class after the second ship Brandenburg has generally established itself .
- ↑ The exact date of the launch is not known, the information fluctuates between the years 1916 and 1917.
- ↑ Different information: 1905 (Dieter Jung: The ships of the Imperial Navy 1914–1918 and their whereabouts. Bernard & Graefe Verlag, Bonn 2004, p. 52/53. ISBN 3-7637-6247-7 )
- ↑ Due to the outbreak of the First World War and the low combat value of a gunboat, the ship was not completed. After the end of the war, the construction was completed and the ship was put into service by the Reichsmarine as a survey ship .
- ↑ Contrary to most publications, the ship's name was officially spelled with "v" and not with "w". This can be seen on the official seal of the auxiliary cruiser. (Paul Schmalenbach: The German auxiliary cruisers 1895–1945. Verlag Gerhard Stalling AG, Oldenburg / Hamburg 1977, p. 46. ISBN 3-7979-1877-1 )
- ↑ The ship was originally used as a mail steamer between Stettin and Kronstadt , then in 1848 for the Prussian Navy. In 1850 the Prussian Adler was converted back into a merchant ship and only finally accepted into the Prussian Navy in 1862.
- ↑ Originally launched under the name Kaiseradler . Since the old imperial yacht Hohenzollern was given this name, the cruiser was renamed Seeadler four months after it was launched .
