Friedrich Forstmeier

Friedrich Forstmeier (born July 8, 1916 , † April 20, 1984 ) was a German naval officer ( captain at sea ) and military historian . From 1972 to 1976 he was head of the Military History Research Office .

Life

Forstmeier grew up in Offenbach am Main . After graduating from high school in 1935, he began studying modern history , German and English at the University of Frankfurt am Main . In 1937 he was called up for military service in the Navy and from then on served in the naval artillery . From 1941 to 1943 he was the battery chief in the naval flak on Tytärsaari . In 1943/44 he was retrained to become a naval officer due to personnel reasons . He was trained with the 16th outpost flotilla in the Kattegat and Skagerrak and in 1944 completed the U-boat watch officer course. His last rank was first lieutenant at sea .

In 1946 he continued his studies and in 1949 passed the state examination for the higher teaching post. In 1950 he became a research assistant in the Historical Division of the United States Army . From 1954 he worked as a teacher at the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium Bonn . In 1957 he joined the German Navy . In 1968 he became head of the marine department at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1970 he was at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg with the by Jürgen Rohwer excited and Andreas Gruber Hill supervised dissertation The evacuation of the Kuban bridge head in the fall of 1943 to the Dr. phil. PhD. As a sea captain, he was head of office from 1972 to 1976. In 1976 he retired.

He was u. a. Co-editor of the 6-volume manual of German military history, 1648–1939 and translator of works by Patrick Beesly and Paul Eddy from the English.

After his service, he dealt with the history of Daimler-Benz .
