Wolfgang von Groote
Wolfgang von Groote (born September 17, 1911 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † July 31, 2000 in Kius ) was a German officer ( colonel ) and military historian . From 1964 to 1969 he was head of the Military History Research Office .
Life
Wolfgang von came from the von Groote family . He first studied at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1934 he joined the Reichswehr and later became a professional soldier in the Wehrmacht . He served in World War II , most recently in the rank of major .
In the post-war period Groote worked temporarily at an elementary school in Oldenburg . He completed the following history studies at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 1948 with Reinhard Wittram with a doctorate . The subject of the dissertation was The emergence of national consciousness in northwest Germany 1790–1830 .
After several years of teaching in Bremen , Groote joined the German Armed Forces in 1956 . Now lieutenant colonel , he was u. a. used in the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) in Bonn and as deputy commander of Panzergrenadierbrigade 16 in Wentorf. From 1961 to 1964 he was a lecturer in military history at the command academy of the Bundeswehr (FüAkBw) in Hamburg. In 1964 he became head of the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1969 he was retired.
Groote co-founded the Bibliotheca Rerum Militarium , the Military History Studies and the Military History Communications . He was co-editor of several military historical writings on behalf of the MGFA such as the Handbuch zur deutschen Militarygeschichte, 1648–1939 .
From 1965 to 1970 Goote was Vice President of the Commission Internationale d'Histoire Militaire .
