Günter Roth (General)

Günter Roth (* 1935 in Würzburg ) is a German officer with the rank of Brigadier General a. D. and military historian . From 1985 to 1995 he was head of the Military History Research Office .

Life

Roth grew up near Sorau in Silesia until 1945 . After graduating from high school in 1954 in Tübingen , he joined the Federal Border Police (BGS) as an officer candidate .

In 1956 he was accepted into the paratrooper troops of the newly founded Bundeswehr as a flag junior . In 1957 he came to the 19 Airborne Jäger Battalion in Kempten .

It initially went through various uses until he studied political science , history and psychology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg from 1971 to 1975 . In 1975, he was at Friedrich August von der Heydte at the Philosophy Department II, University of Wuerzburg with the dissertation The balance in Europe in the mid seventies to Dr. phil. PhD.

After that he was u. a. Commander of the Army Technical College for Education and Business (FSH Erz / Wi) in Darmstadt. From 1984 to 1985 Günter Roth was commander of Airborne Brigade 27 in Lippstadt and from 1985 to 1995 head of the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau and Potsdam. He was also President of the Military History Commission of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Roth published mainly in the fields of military policy and the history of operations.
