Friedhelm Klein

Friedhelm Klein (born October 29, 1940 in Munich ) is a German officer ( Colonel retired) and military historian . From 1998 to 2001 he was head of the Military History Research Office .

Life

After graduating from high school at Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium Mannheim, Klein did military service as a reserve officer candidate in the armed forces . Most recently he held the rank of lieutenant in the reserve. From 1960 to 1965 he studied Middle and Modern History and Political Science at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (MA).

In 1966 he was a recruiter in the Bundeswehr; he initially served as an officer in the troop service in various roles a. a. as a company commander . He later became a historian staff officer in the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau. In the 1970s, Klein graduated from the command academy of the German Armed Forces (FüAkBw) in Hamburg and worked there as a lecturer in military history. From 1983 to 1987 he headed the “Training, Information, Specialized Studies” (AIF) department in Freiburg. From 1987 to 1997 he was head of the department (including internal leadership ) in the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) in Bonn. From 1997 to 2001 he was Colonel i. G. Head of the MGFA in Potsdam and President of the German Commission for Military History . He published u. a. in the military history magazine (MGZ). From 1999 to 2003, Klein was President of the European Military Press Associations .

From 2008 to 2014 he was honorary chairman of the city synod of the Evangelical Church in Mannheim . Klein was chairman of the Association of Friends of the Defense History Museum Schloss Rastatt e. V.
