Historian officer
A historian officer (HistOffz) is an officer in the Bundeswehr . He deals scientifically with the research and presentation of German military history in international comparison. Using written and non-written records ( sources ), he researches, documents and communicates the history of the military in its diverse network of relationships, such as in its political, economic, social, cultural or technical contexts. The publication of the results obtained is part of the scientific process. The publication can take place in print, in the form of lectures and exhibitions or using new media. In addition, teaching is an important area of activity for HistOffz.
activities
- Research and presentation of German military history in the context of its international references, as a sub-discipline and according to the methods of historical studies . The military history of the 20th century should be in the foreground.
- Participation in research assignments based on a critical study of sources and literature.
- Participation in the pedagogical and didactic preparation of research results for historical education in the Bundeswehr.
- Participation in military history studies and reports on current issues for the BMVg .
- Collaboration in expert opinions and providing information on military history issues and facts to military agencies of the Bundeswehr and NATO , to civil agencies (especially as administrative assistance) as well as to scientific institutes and scientifically active persons at home and abroad.
education
As a rule, historians have studied history at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg . Lateral entrants who have studied at civil universities, as well as reserve officers with scientific training can also be used as HistOffz, provided they are assigned to a corresponding post.

Positions for historian officers are available at the Army and Air Force officer schools , as well as at the Mürwik Naval School , the NCO schools for the armed forces, the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (formerly MGFA) and the Bundeswehr museums.
