Cyanea profuga (English common name : Mapulehu Valley Cyanea ) is an extremely rare shrub species of the genus Cyanea within the family of the bellflower family(Campanulaceae). It was considered lost between 1912 and 2002.

description

Cyanea profuga is an unbranched shrub that reaches a height of 1.8 to 2.4 m. The elliptical leaves are 18 to 24 cm long and 7 to 10 cm wide. They are hairless. The leaf margin is serrated callous, pointed at the leaf tip and wedge-shaped at the leaf base. The leaf stalks are 8 to 12.5 cm long.

The inflorescence contains nine to twelve white flowers. The inflorescence axis is 25 to 40 mm and the flower stalks are 8 to 10 mm long. The elongated to inverted cone-shaped flower cup is 6 to 7 mm long and 3 to 4 mm wide. The elongated calyx lobes are 3 to 5 mm long and 1 to 2 mm wide. The shoot tip is rounded to a point. The bald corolla is 30 to 35 mm long and 2 to 3 mm wide. The flower tube is semi-upright. The lobes are spread apart. Their length corresponds approximately to the length of the flower tube or 3/4 of the length. The "gynostegium" (stamp column) is smooth. The anthers are smooth. The two lower anthers have pointed tufts of white hair. The berries are unknown.

habitat

The habitat of Cyanea profuga are semi-arid to moist forests at altitudes between 1120 and 1200 m in the Mapulehu Valley on Molokaʻi .
