Reinhard Appel (born February 21, 1927 in Königshütte ; † June 26, 2011 in Bonn ) was a German journalist , editor and general manager .

Childhood and youth

Appel spent his childhood and youth in Berlin-Spandau from December 1927 , belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Marien and attended elementary and middle school. Then he applied to the teacher training institute in Berlin-Schöneberg (which was housed in the building of the Prinz-Heinrich-Gymnasium ), was also accepted and, after its closure in 1944, a candidate for teaching in Brandenburg (Havel) . However , when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in January 1945, his educational career ended.

Professional background

From 1946 to 1950 he was a volunteer , then editor and reporter at the Stuttgarter Zeitung , where his oldest brother Reinhold was already employed as a sports journalist . He then moved with his family to the then federal capital Bonn , where he was a correspondent for the Stuttgarter Zeitung until 1971 . In 1962 and 1963 he was also chairman of the federal press conference .

Then Appel was from 1963 to 1973 and again from 1986 to 1991 moderator of the ZDF series "Journalists ask - politicians answer" and from 1976 to 1986 moderator of the ZDF series "Citizens ask - politicians answer". Between 1965 and 1987 he also moderated the so-called “ elephant rounds ” with the current Federal Chancellor and the challengers or the party leaders of the opposition parties. Appel also directed various television programs in which citizens discussed with the Federal President.

From 1973 to 1976 he was director of Deutschlandfunk and then from 1976 to 1988 editor-in-chief of ZDF. There he worked on the founding of many programs that still shape the program today ( Heute-Journal , WISO , Morgenmagazin ). In March 1977 he ran for the office of ZDF director, but was defeated by Karl-Günther von Hase . As the radio officer of the ZDF for the Deutschlandsender Kultur from 1993/94 until the merger with the RIAS to form Deutschlandradio, Reinhard Appel played a key role in transforming Deutsche Welle into its current structure.

With his wife Marianne, b. Bauder, he has three children: sons Stephan and Clemens and daughter Eva.

Awards

Reinhard Appel was a member of the 20-person board of trustees from the founding of the Gustav Heinemann Citizens' Prize in 1977 until his death . He was also a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation .
