List of German torpedo boats (1871-1919)

This list contains all torpedo boats of the Imperial Navy from the beginning, with the exception of the large torpedo boats and the coastal A-class torpedo boats .

The first German torpedo boats are 14 smaller harbor vehicles and tugs , as well as seven rowing vehicles that guarded the Elbe and Weser estuaries in 1870 . They were provisionally equipped as spar torpedo boats for the volunteer sea defense.

The steamers initially bore the Roman numerals I to IV and were later given their names.

Class I torpedo vehicle 1878-1880

The Zieten first class torpedo vehicle was used to test newly developed torpedoes until 1880. From May 1878, your commandant was the lieutenant captain and later Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz , who had been responsible for the organization of the new torpedo weapon since 1877. In 1881 the Zieten was converted into an Aviso .

Torpedo gunboat

Torpedo cannon boats only existed in the Imperial Navy for a few years; they are to be regarded as pure test boats .

Ocean-going torpedo boats and large torpedo boats (destroyers)

The successor to the division torpedo boats were the large torpedo boats of the Imperial Navy from 1898, which corresponded to the torpedo boat destroyers of other navies in terms of size and combat power, but under the operational doctrine of mass torpedo use in the fleet battle.
