Sea defense

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A sea defense is a reserve organization of a country's navy .

Sea defense in Germany

The Navy of the North German Confederation consisted of the fleet and the sea defense. The sea rifle was the counterpart to the Landwehr in the army. The conscripts had to do three years of active service, followed by four years in the reserve and another five years in the naval service. During the Franco-Prussian War, it was temporarily considered to equip ships as auxiliary cruisers by a voluntary sea defense and to use them for the privateer war .

The regulations for the Navy of the North German Confederation were adopted for the Imperial Navy in 1871 . Because of the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty , the sea defense was dissolved after the end of the First World War .

Situation in other countries

In many other countries there were also sea defense organizations in the 19th and 20th centuries, for example in Greece, the Netherlands , Russia , Sweden and Austria-Hungary .

In Denmark there is still a naval home guard ( Marinehjemmeværnet ). Their tasks include the monitoring of fairways and the environment as well as sea rescue.
