from 1870:

SMS Elisabeth was a warship of the Navy of the North German Confederation and later of the Imperial Navy . In terms of ship type, she was a covered corvette of the Arcona class and, with an even longer hull, formed the third construction lot in this class.

construction

The Elisabeth , named after Queen Elisabeth of Prussia , was built at the Royal Shipyard in Gdansk . The launch took place on October 18, 1868, the commissioning followed a year later. She was 79.3 m long, 13 m wide and had a draft of 6.50 m. With her expansion steam engine , she could reach a maximum speed of 12  knots and was rigged as a full ship . From 1870, the armament of Elisabeth consisted of 17 ring cannons with a caliber of 15 cm. She was the last and largest ship of the Arcona class.

Mission history

In 1869 she took part in the festivities for the opening of the Suez Canal and hosted the Prussian Crown Prince . The future Admiral Guido Karcher served as a young officer on board at the time. During the Franco-German War , the corvette was initially stationed in Kiel . In 1870 she moved to Wilhelmshaven to be used as a commercial sturgeon cruiser. However, the quick armistice prevented the deployment.

In 1872 Elisabeth became part of the Reichsgeschwader , which from 1872 to 1874 was to carry out a circumnavigation planned to strengthen the reputation of the German Empire, which was founded in 1871 . On October 12, 1872 the Elisabeth ran together with the flagship of the squadron, the armored frigate Friedrich Carl , and the gunboat Albatross from Kiel to the West Indies . With the stationary Vineta and Gazelle there , the circumnavigation of the world was planned with a duration of 3 years. After visits to Venezuela , Colombia and Haiti, these plans were then rejected on March 10, 1873 in Havana because of the outbreak of the Third Carlist War and the founding of the First Spanish Republic . The Elisabeth returned to Europe with the other ships, with the exception of the Albatross , and moved directly to the Spanish coast as part of the German squadron there, where she u. a. watched the sea battle off Cartagena .

1876–78 she went on a world tour. She was sent to the west coast of Nicaragua in 1878 in the course of the so-called Eisenstuck affair together with the Leipzig and Ariadne . From November 1881 to April 1883 Elisabeth was part of the East Asia Squadron . In 1884 she first brought her together with the seagull Dr. Gustav Nachtigal to Cameroon , where he concluded “protection treaties” with local tribal princes. From there, Elisabeth was sent to Angra Pequeña, later Lüderitz Bay , to join Leipzig and hoist the German flag. This was done on August 7, 1884 by her commanding officer , Captain zur See Schering, and was the starting point for the establishment of the German South West Africa colony . Three months later, Elisabeth and the hyena were also at the flag-raising on the island of Matupi in Bismarck -Archipelago involved. In the summer of 1885 the Elisabeth was together with other ships in Australian waters when the ship under Captain Karl Paschen was called to East Africa on his flagship Stosch to support the conclusion of protection treaties. Elisabeth arrived in Zanzibar in August 1885 . The ship was part of the East African cruiser squadron . The squadron was meanwhile led by Rear Admiral Knorr .

Whereabouts

On September 20, 1887, she was removed from the list of warships, then served as the Hulk and was broken up in Stettin in 1904.
