SMS Pelikan was a mine ship of the Imperial Navy . Originally it was built as a transport steamer for the replacement of the overseas crew of German naval ships, later converted into a mine ship.
history
Construction was requested for the first time in 1877, but the Reichstag refused to approve the corresponding funds. The Admiralty then introduced the procedure of using outbound and homeward warships for replacement transports. Later one also used the liner service of the meanwhile established shipping companies. In the budget for 1888, funds for the construction of a transport vehicle were again required and this time also approved, so that construction was finally carried out.
After the Pelikan was put into service, however, it was found that the need for such a vehicle was no longer there, so the ship was used for secondary tasks. The use as a guard ship for the port of Kiel , for the oceanographic exploration of the Baltic Sea or as a "simulaker" during fleet maneuvers were not adequate use.
It was not until the formation of the mine test commission of the Imperial Navy on November 1, 1895 that it was used. The Pelikan was assigned to this commission as a test ship and achieved great importance in the field of technical development and training for the Navy. In addition, she was after the serious accident of the liner SMS Kaiser Friedrich III. Used on the Adlergrund shoal north of Cape Arkona in 1901 to remeasure the sea route.
Operations in the First World War
At the beginning of the war, the Pelikan was in the Imperial Shipyard in Danzig for a general overhaul of the boiler system. After completing this work on September 25, 1914, she went operationally under the direct command of the deep sea fleet as a mine ship.
The pelican was used
- on December 22, 1914 together with SMS Nautilus to lay a mine barrier in the German Bight
- on July 31, 1915 and August 1, 1915, while laying a submarine mine barrier in the German Bight
- on August 13, 1915, when another U-boat mine barrier was laid in the German Bight
- on October 2, 1915 and October 3, 1915 when laying underground mine barriers in the German Bight
- from June 1, 1916 only used as a mine test ship, as the two mine cruisers Brummer and Bremse provided modern ships for laying barriers
- from the end of the war in 1918 until October 15, 1920 used as a mother ship for mine clearance vehicles
One month later, on November 15, 1920, it was removed from the list of warships. The Pelikan was sold to Hamburg on April 8, 1921 to be scrapped and immediately demolished there.
