The mine cruiser SMS Brummer of the German Imperial Navy was built as a “new mine steamer C” in Stettin at the Vulcan shipyard . The ship was launched on December 11, 1915 and was commissioned on April 2, 1916 with a crew of 309.
Technical specifications
The Brummer was equipped with a turbine system that allowed a speed of 28 knots. This system and that of its sister ship Bremse were originally intended for the Russian battle cruiser Navarin , but were confiscated when the war broke out in 1914.
The armament consisted of four 15 cm cannons and two 8.8 cm anti-aircraft cannons and two 50 cm torpedo tubes. For the purpose of offensive mine warfare, 400 mines could be taken on board.
Mission history
The Brummer took part in advances of the IV reconnaissance group in the North Sea. Together with the sister ship Bremse , a mining operation was carried out in January 1917. In October 1917, the two ships successfully chased Allied convoys between Bergen and the Shetland Islands . On October 17, 1917, the HMS Strongbow and the HMS Mary Rose and nine Scandinavian merchant ships were sunk. Further attacks were prevented by superior Allied naval forces. An advance to Doggerbank with the small cruiser Stralsund and torpedo boats remained fruitless. In June 1918 the Brummer laid mines in the German Bight with the small cruiser Strasbourg .
When unrest broke out in the fleet in November 1918, the Brummer and the Bremse were dispatched to the Baltic Sea, first to Sønderborg , then to Swinoujscie . There the ship was decommissioned. Shortly thereafter, had Brummer it running and with the rest of the German High Seas Fleet to return Scapa Flow are transferred. She was seven months later, on June 21, 1919 on the orders of Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter , sunk by her crew . The ship was not raised. The wreck lies on coordinates 58 ° 53 '49.5 " N , 3 ° 9' 14.2" W .
