SMS Wörth was a ship of the line of the Brandenburg class of the Imperial Navy classifiedas an ironclad until 1899. The name was chosen to commemorate the Battle of Wörth in the Franco-German War on August 6, 1870.
The four ships of this class were the first radio- equipped ships in the German Navy and the first German warships to be equipped on a larger scale with nickel steel armor in the ship's belt up to 40 cm thick. The arrangement of the heavy artillery of six 28 cm guns in three twin turrets on the midship line enabled broadside fire with all guns on both sides. The following Kaiser Friedrich class again had the smaller caliber of 24 cm and only four guns fore and aft.
The Wörth was launched on August 6, 1892 and was christened by the sister of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Princess Victoria zu Schaumburg-Lippe . She took part in the autumn maneuvers of 1894 as the fleet flagship of the commanding admiral and chief of the training fleet Admiral Max von der Goltz .
In 1900 the Wörth was sent to China together with the II. Division to suppress the Boxer Rebellion , but without taking part in combat operations there. In August 1901 the division returned to Wilhelmshaven .
During the First World War, the ship belonged to the V Squadron under Vice Admiral Grapow and provided coastal protection service. From 1915 on, the technically outdated ship was used as a residential hulk in Gdansk . On March 10, 1919, it was removed from the list of warships and scrapped in Danzig.
